Abstract:

This paper presents an automated currency recognition system utilizing image processing techniques. The proposed approach identifies both the country of origin and the denomination of a given banknote, focusing exclusively on paper currencies. The system first determines the country by analyzing specific predefined areas of interest. Subsequently, it extracts the denomination value using distinctive features such as size, color, and textual information, depending on variations among banknotes from the same country. The study considers 20 of the most widely traded currencies and their respective denominations. Experimental results demonstrate that the system effectively and efficiently recognizes test banknotes with high accuracy.
