Abstract:

The rapid increase in non-linear and sensitive loads in power systems has led to significant deterioration in power quality, primarily due to harmonics, reactive power, and voltage distortions. To address these challenges, this paper presents the development of control techniques for Shunt Active Power Filters (SAPFs) using Fuzzy Logic and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). These intelligent controllers are designed to enhance the dynamic performance of SAPFs by offering adaptive and robust compensation of harmonics and reactive power under varying load conditions. Unlike conventional PI controllers, Fuzzy Logic and Neural Network-based techniques do not rely on an accurate mathematical model and can handle system non-linearities effectively. The proposed system is implemented in MATLAB/Simulink and is evaluated under various non-linear loading scenarios. Simulation results reveal that the intelligent control techniques significantly reduce Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), improve voltage profile, and enhance the overall power quality of the system. The hybrid approach offers fast dynamic response, accurate tracking of reference currents, and strong adaptability to changing power system conditions.
